Department Of 'Do Not Nominate People Like This'

Exhibit A: the candidate for lieutenant governor of Illinois:

It turns out that Scott Lee Cohen (D), the Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor in Illinois, has more extensive problems than were reported yesterday.

In an extraordinary interview with the local CBS news affiliate, we learn Cohen's own brother sued him for $200,000, he tried to choke his wife before they were married and he didn't pay child support while spending $3 million on his primary race.

In an interview with the ABC News affiliate, Cohen also admitted to using "inject-able steroids" which "contributed to periodic episodes of violence against his family."

As for the allegations that he pulled a knife on his prostitute ex-girlfriend, Cohen claims the wounds on her throat were "self-inflicted."
Wow. That right there is the motherlode of things that you don't want to have on your docket if you are a political candidate.

Honestly, any one of these phrases are a problem:
  • 'own brother sued him'
  • 'tried to choke his wife'
  • 'didn't pay child support'
  • 'admitted using steroids'
  • 'pulled a knife on...'
  • '...prostitute ex-girlfriend'
The fact that he has all six of them is really, really bad news.

However, the larger question is this: Will Cohen's, errr, less-than-positive outlook turn voters off, or will the Republicans run someone better (or at all) because the position of lieutenant governor is essentially a joke (in Illinois at least)?
