Dude, You're So Gay
Oh, give me a friggin' break:
O'Reilly: Did he actually say that word, enchanted?Yes, we know what you mean Mr. Goldberg: You meant that it was a 'question that fits our homosexual times'.
Goldberg: I cannot picture any journalist asking Franklin Roosevelt if he was enchanted.... Because they were men of a different era, they were men of a John Wayne era. Today's men...especially men in journalism, they're softer.... They want to know about your feelings.
O'Reilly: I don't know what that means. I know what the enchanted forest is...
Goldberg: It's the kind of question that fits our metrosexual times, if you know what I mean.
Now, I will readily admit that Mr. Zeleny's question to the President was, well, pretty weak. But apparently the use of the word 'enchanted' makes you gay (nevermind that Mr. Zeleny himself is indeed a gay man -- something that was lost on O'Reilly and Goldberg).
If you are going to criticize a reporter for asking a soft-ball question, then criticize them. Come right out and say, 'look, that question was stupid.' But to insinuate that the question is 'soft', or less-than-manly seems overly petty and unnecessary to me.

The Allegiance Of Heroes
He calls himself Shadowhare, and he wears a mask and a cape to conceal his true identity. He's Cincinnati's own version of a superhero fighting crime and injustice where he finds it.Perhaps Batman was an extreme comparison. Maybe The Mystery Men is a better example...
"We help enforce the law by doing what we can in legal standards, so we carry handcuffs, pepper spray … all the legal weapons," said Shadowhare. "We will do citizen's arrests. We will intervene on crimes if there is one happening in front of us."
The man behind Shadowhare's mask is 21 years old and from Milford. Those are the only clues to his true identity that he will reveal. Shadowhare said he was abused as a child and grew up in foster homes, perhaps leading him to a life helping others.
"My message to Cincinnati is that there is still hope and all we have to do is stand together," he said.
Shadowhare is not alone in his quest to fight crime. He heads up a group of men -- and one woman -- called the "Allegiance of Heroes." The members communicate with each other in online forums. Among the members are Aclyptico in Pennsylvania, Wall Creeper in Colorado and Master Legend in Florida.
"I've even teamed up with Mr. Extreme in California -- San Diego -- and we were trying to track down a rapist," said Shadowhare.

Frankly, the Rude Pundit doesn't give a happy monkeyfuck about what day this is in the President's presidency. Of course, of course, there's significance to round numbers and such shit. But, you know, it ain't like there's jackshit we can do if we don't like what's happening. Barack Obama ain't a bottle of wine that you sip and send back. But, hey, like a sickeningly in-love couple giving gifts on their one-month dating anniversary, we're gonna celebrate.I think that so far the President is doing a good job. Not great, mind you, but decent enough. There is still a ton of work to be done though...

Marriage In Maine
It is becoming clear that New England is rife with proponents of marriage equality:A same-sex marriage bill just passed the State Senate there by a 20-15 vote; the Senate was seen as the more skeptical of the two houses.Next stop: the mid-Atlantic states.
The governor has suggested he may be shifting toward supporting the bill, which may also then go to a referendum in November.

The McCain/Romney Reunion Tour
In an effort to revive the Grand Old Party's image, congressional Republican leaders are launching a series of forums and town hall meetings to engage the American public in policy discussion.
The outreach initiative -- known as the National Council for a New America (NCNA) -- is set to include a blue ribbon panel of well-known Republicans like Arizona Sen. John McCain, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
The first event will be held Saturday at a town hall meeting in Northern Virginia. Topics will cover the economy, education, energy, health care and national security.
House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, one of the leading architects of the effort, told FOX News Thursday that the program's objective is to "forge new solutions" and "engage again and empower the people to become part of the process."
"All the ideas shouldn't come from Washington," said Cantor.

Way to go...Joe
Vice President Joe Biden, discussing the spread of swine flu, said Thursday morning that he would advise against traveling in an airplane or in any confined space -- a comment that an airline spokesman said borders on "fearmongering."
"To suggest that people not fly at this stage of things is a broad brush stroke bordering on fearmongering," American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said. "The facts of the situation at this stage anyway certainly don't support that."
Roughly 250,000 passengers use American Airlines daily, and not a single one of them has tested positive for swine flu, Smith said.
Biden, a longtime Amtrak rider who commuted daily between Delaware and Washington for decades, said on NBC's "Today" show Thursday morning that he wouldn't necessarily advise family members not to travel to Mexico, but "I would tell members of my family, and I have, I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places right now.
"It's not ... going to Mexico, it's that you are in a confined aircraft when one person sneezes, it goes everywhere through the aircraft. That's me." - Joshua Miller

Where's Rudy?
Is Rudy Giuliani running for governor or not? With Governor Paterson looking increasingly ineffective in his job, Giuliani is back on the attack, making the sorts of clamorous policy declarations that have him sounding an awful lot like a candidate. Yet he isn’t a candidate, and won’t even say if he’s seriously considering a run. Nobody has ever doubted Giuliani’s need for attention, but some Republican insiders say that there’s a strategy behind the coy indecisiveness. He has to lull the Democrats into thinking he’s not going to run, so they don’t dump Paterson and put Andrew Cuomo up instead, who would be a lot harder to beat. In the polls, Giuliani leads Paterson by 27 points but trails Cuomo by 14—not an insurmountable margin but a portent of a grueling battle. My hunch is that he'll pass -- but I suppose that stranger things have happened.
At least George Will still likes him...

Quote Of The Day
The lawyers we are talking about, after all, are lawyers for the president, whose oath of office demands that he faithfully execute the laws. These lawyers are not there to help him circumvent or break the law, but to ensure that it's followed. They violated that core responsibility and the sheer shoddiness of their work reveals that they knew it." -Andrew Sullivan, commenting on Clive Crook's apparent defense of waterboarding.

Dick Cheney Is Not Darth Vader
He is more Darth Sidious (The Emperor). David Edelstein ponders:Now that former vice-president Dick Cheney, last seen being wheeled into history, has returned with a vengeance to the public sphere, the debate has resumed over which movie supervillain he most resembles. A couple of years ago, writer Darin Murphy took umbrage at the widely used Darth Vader comparison for being unfair to Vader, who did not, after all, defer his military service five times and never shot anyone in the face unless he meant it. Two weeks ago, Maureen Dowd reported that George Lucas has also rejected the analogy: Cheney, Lucas said, is the wicked emperor who pulled the strings and turned his protégé to the dark side. Unfortunately, this would mean George W. Bush is Vader, which is an even bigger slur on poor Darth, a murderer of great discipline and character who, moreover, was finally moved to slay his demonic overlord.Read the rest here.
Although the Galactic Emperor, né Palpatine, shares many of Cheney’s core values—principally that one must embrace the “dark side” in order best to serve a centralized government with no checks on its authority—he does not fire the imagination the way Vader does. He’s a dullard. Perhaps it’s time to consider other candidates.

QUARTZ HILL, Calif. - Don't mess with a marching band girl, especially one armed with a baton.
A 17-year-old high school marching band student beat up two assailants who tried to mug her as she walked to school in this high desert community about 40 miles north of Los Angeles, sheriff's officials said Tuesday.
The girl punched one of the men in the nose, kicked the other in the groin and beat both with her large baton before she ran away on Friday morning, officials said.

Specter's New Challenge
Not all Pennsylvania Democrats are down with Arlen Specter.'Not all Democrats are down'? *rolls eyes*
Though the party-switching senator has the support of President Obama and Gov. Ed Rendell, at least two potential candidates are leaving open the door to challenge Specter in the 2010 Democratic primary.
Rep. Joe Sestak, who's been a prolific fundraiser, is considering defying party leaders and running against Specter despite Tuesday's hoopla, though he told FOXNews.com on Wednesday, "I have not made up my mind on it."
Sestak, a second-term House member, is basing his decision on what Specter may do or say in the coming days. Sestak said he wants to hear Specter make his case to Pennsylvania voters about why Specter now should carry the banner for Democrats after representing the Keystone State as a Republican for 29 years.
[snip]
The other potential challenger to Specter for the Democratic nomination for senator is Joe Torsella, a former Rendell aide who headed the National Constitution Center and is now chairman of the Pennsylvania Board of Education.
In a written statement Tuesday, Torsella reiterated that he decided to run for Senate to bring new leadership to the chamber.
"Nothing about today's news regarding Senator Specter changes that, or my intention to run for the Democratic nomination to the Senate in 2010 -- an election that is still a full year away," he said.
Still, Arlen Specter may be causing a buzz in the current political conversation, but he may still have to fight for the Democratic nomination.
I am still wondering why Specter didn't just 'pull a Lieberman'. He could have lost to Toomey in the primary next spring, and still spanked him in the general running as an independent candidate. That's what I would have done...

Taking The 'Swine' Out Of Swine Flu
WASHINGTON, April 28 (Reuters) - What's in a name? U.S. pork producers are finding that the name of the virus spreading from Mexico is affecting their business, prompting U.S. officials to argue for changing the name from swine flu.I love me some bacon my friends. It will take a lot more than a virus named 'swine' to get me to stop eating pork.
At a news briefing, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack took pains to repeatedly refer to the flu as the "H1N1 virus."
"This is not a food-borne illness, virus. It is not correct to refer to it as swine flu because really that's not what this is about," Vilsack said.
[snip]
For U.S. pork producers the swine flu name has hurt, forcing government officials into the position of stressing that American pork is safe to eat and that other countries should not ban imports.
Pork, soybean and corn prices have fallen in the last two days, "and if this continues, obviously you have significant potential, which is why it's important to get this right," Vilsack said.
At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there was also talk of stripping the "swine" from swine flu, which CDC acting director Richard Besser said was leading to the misapprehension that people can catch the disease from pork.
"That's not helpful to pork producers. That's not helpful to people who eat pork. It's not helpful to people who are wondering, how can they get this infection," Besser told a briefing.
Although, this might get me to stop... I think I just had a minor heart-attack just looking at the picture.

Not-So-Smooth-Sailing For The GOP

While I do not agree with the meme that says that the Republican party is in 'shambles', there is definitely some work to be done to unite the major conservative party in this country:
Faced with a high-profile defection and the prospect of political irrelevance in the Senate, Republicans took off the gloves Wednesday for a ferocious game of finger-pointing.Look, the Republican party will make it through all of this. Make no mistake, there is indeed work to be done (for starters, these cats should all read Reagan's 11th Commandment) for some unity. However, much to Democrats chagrin, these things are cyclical. I remember in 1994 when it was the Democrats who were involuntarily thrust into the minority and then when George W. Bush came into office in 2001, Karl Rove started talking about a 'permanent Republican majority'. Well, we see how that worked out. Not. Good.
Republican Sens. Orrin Hatch and George Voinovich blamed the Club for Growth for imposing a right-wing litmus test that chased Arlen Specter out of the Republican Party. The Club for Growth blamed Specter — first for helping to ruin the GOP and then for leaving it. A leading Republican strategist blamed the party for turning its back on moderates. Sen. Lindsey Graham sniped at Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele. Specter’s pollster blamed the stimulus bill. Karl Rove blamed Specter himself.
And the National Republican Senatorial Committee set about trying to taint Specter among Pennsylvania Democrats by reminding them that he was once aligned with Republican President George W. Bush.
In the nasty game of Who Lost Specter, only Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell seemed to go unscathed — although his pain will come as he tries to lead a caucus that is likely to be too small to stand in the way of anything the Democrats want to do.
It's cyclical folks. In a couple of years, the Democrats will have either a) become corrupt or b) royally screwed things up -- then Republicans will move back into the majority with little difficulty.
All of that said, to transition into power smoothly, the Republican party really needs to take a good look at itself in the mirror. It's cannot always the party of the uber-fiscally conservative evangelical Christian -- those Republicans
“I don’t think it had anything to do with [the Republican party] leadership; it had to do with Club for Growth,” the Utah Republican said of Specter’s switch. “I wish they’d spend their money going after Democrats, rather than Republicans. ... Let’s just be honest about it: In blue states, we’re not going to get conservative Republicans. It’s just that simple.”Now, I am very cautious to call Pennsylvania a 'blue state', I mean come on -- it was not that long ago that we elected Rick Santorum to the Senate (and he thinks that homosexuality is the gateway to man-on-dog love). Look at our two current U.S. Senators: Arlen Specter - a (formerly) moderate, pro-choice Republican and Bob Casey, Jr. - a moderate, pro-life Democrat. Pennsylvanian's like their politicians to be somewhere in the middle.
To that end, why on earth would Pat Toomey and Club For Growth Republicans want to jeopardize the balance? Surely they must have known that Pat Toomey's ideology does not necessarily reflect the majority of Pennsylvanians. Were they planning on a campaign of smearing Specter's name and record? If they had, there would have been a good chance that a Democrat could materialize in November and beat the Toomey campaign.
Now we have Arlen Specter switching to the Democratic party -- likely to beat Toomey in the 2010 Senatorial election -- AND adding a supra-majority for the Dems in the U.S. Senate.
That's not a good sign for the GOP.
However, I must concede that it is absolutely Toomey's right to challenge Specter when he sees a genuine disagreement in policy or position. It's this finger-pointing and bickering that really is going to hurt the Republican party in the long run. I can clearly see factions forming: moderate conservatives versus hard-right conservatives. If there are distinct lines being drawn in the sand, a real threat of disunity could threaten the party.
If the GOP truly wants to uphold the idea of a 'big tent', then Republicans like Arlen Specter (well, formerly I suppose) and Meghan McCain should not and CANNOT be painted as 'not real Republicans'. The Party Of Lincoln needs to take a step back, take a deep breath, and evaluate what it is that they represent. If it continues to be a hard-line conservative ideology that criticizes dissent and ostracizes whole swaths of Americans (homosexuals, minorities, youth, etc.), then I see only bad things for the party.
However, if the 'big tent' is an idea that the GOP wishes to truly embrace, then attacking gays, Hollywood, colleges and other supposedly 'liberal' bastions is an option that needs to be off of the table. A conservative party with a small government, low tax message should be extremely appealing to many Americans -- regardless of how they feel about things like gay marriage.

She may be best remembered for her star turns besides hunky men like Harrison Ford in Witness and Tom Cruise in Top Gun but Kelly McGillis recently announced that she is “done with men”, confirming a long-time rumor that she is a lesbian.Good for her. I have but one question: Really? A 'long-time rumor'? The last thing that I heard from Kelly McGillis was Top Gun. Had anyone else heard these rumors?
Currently single, she responded that her next mate would “definitely” be a woman. “I’m done with the man thing. I did that, I need to move on in life,” McGillis confirmed. “That’s another part of being true to yourself...that’s been a challenge for me personally.”
A role model in her own right, she opened up about her struggle to accept herself. “I think [accepting being homosexual] that was an ongoing process from the time I was about 12,” she revealed. “I had a lot of things happened that convinced me that God was punishing me for being gay. That was a hard process.”

Offer Solutions, Not Negativity
Standing up and telling the 'party of no' that they need to change course:
Utah Gov. John Huntsman, a Republican rising star who has been frank in urging his party to adapt to the times or face extinction, is now telling GOP leaders in Washington to stop saying "no."Cue Limbaugh, Hannity et al deriding the Governor as 'not a Republican' in 3... 2... 1...
"You can't just say no," Huntsman told ABC News in an interview published Wednesday. "You can't just obstruct or obfuscate. Instead of just kind of grousing and complaining, it would do us all a whole lot of good if we actually started engaging directly in finding compromises and common ground and shared solutions."
Hunstman, often described as a moderate, has embraced parts of President Obama's economic agenda, including a cap-and-trade program and his $787 billion economic stimulus package. Though he opposes gay marriage, Huntsman has frustrated many conservatives by supporting civil unions for same-sex couples.
[snip]
Huntsman acknowledged that the GOP leadership in Congress "deserves high marks for unified opposition, getting everybody in line, keeping everybody contained, in opposition to some of the initiatives of the Obama administration." But, he said, "that now needs to be supplemented by real ideas and solutions."
Echoing some of the Democratic National Committee's favorite talking points, Huntsman said that a Republican party that lacks ideas has no choice but to say "no."
"When you are devoid of the ideas, or the content that would allow you to articulate or paint a better future, you have no choice other than to fall back on 'no, we are not going support it, it cannot be done,'" Huntsman told ABC.
He said the only way Republicans will find themselves at the negotiating table is if they offer "concrete substantive solutions."

If It Weren't For That Pesky 14th Amendment...
[W]hy is the gap between white and black voters even higher for Biden than it is for Obama? Is this an Obama Effect or is it the preference of black voters for the Democratic Party? Let’s pick a random 2008 race between two white candidates: the North Carolina race between now-Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) and then-Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.). Seventy-five percent of voters were white, and Dole won them by 18 points. But 19 percent of voters were black, and Hagan won them by 95 points. Obama only defeated Sen. John McCain by 90 points among black voters in North Carolina (while losing whites by 29 points).Check out the piece, it's extremely interesting. Byron York's thoughts can be found here.
So there are two explanations here. Explanation A: There is an Obama Effect that is dazzling black voters to such an extent that they are supporting white Democrats even more strongly than they support Obama. Explanation B: Black voters strongly support the Democratic Party, and have since the 1960s, for a number of complicated reasons. I think Explanation B is more likely, which is problematic for Republicans if they, like York, equate the “actual” support for Obama’s policies with “support from whites.”

Should The U.S. Abolish The CIA?
Or at the very least give the Agency a complete overhaul? John Judis contemplates:The question that Congress might ponder, but won’t, is whether the structure of our foreign policy apparatus - the power and responsibility vested in a secret branch of government – invites abuse. That was the position of the late Sen. Daniel P. Moynihan who argued for abolishing the CIA. He didn’t want to eliminate intelligence, but he wanted to return it to the purview of the State Department, while giving the armed forces the responsibility for overseas intervention.I think that there is a strong argument that having any secretive agency is -- in the words of The Pajama Mom -- 'just asking for trouble'...

Rush Limbaugh To Specter: Take McCain With You

Sorry all of you McCain fans, I know this will be tough to hear (read?):
Conservative host Rush Limbaugh said Tuesday he isn't sorry to see Arlen Specter leave the GOP — and that many Republicans wish the Pennsylvania senator would take a few others with him when he goes.B-Diddy and I were just talking about this yesterday. I think that it's interesting that throughout the campaign last year, so many conservative pundits and talking heads supported John McCain. But as soon as Obama won the election, there were so many Monday Morning Quarterbacks who said things like, "Oh, well... we never did like McCain."
"A lot of people say, 'Well, Specter, take [Sen. John] McCain with you. And his daughter [Meghan]. Take McCain and his daughter with you if you're gonna…" he told listeners, dissolving in laughter.
"…..It's ultimately good. You're weeding out people who aren't really Republicans," he said.
Limbaugh did concede the downside of Specter's defection. "It makes the Senate essentially as big a slam dunk for Obama and the Democrats as the House of Representatives already is," he said.
Let's face it, McCain was the best candidate that the GOP could have run last year, period. There was nobody better for the party as a whole. For Limbaugh to say that John McCain (or Meghan for that matter) is not 'really Republican' is simply ludicrous.
Then again, Limbaugh himself is simply ludicrous.

Big Mail
A(nother) valid gripe about the U.S. Postal Service:Just as General Motors has in effect subsidized Big Oil by continuing to build gas-guzzlers in recent years, so has the USPS continued to subsidize Big Mail by shaping its operations to encourage what it now calls, revealingly, "standard mail" -- that is, advertising junk mail.In other news: there is a 'Big Mail' cabal?
Most American citizens are blissfully unaware of the degree to which USPS subsidizes U.S. businesses by means of the fees it collects from ordinary postal customers. For example, if you wish to mail someone a large envelope weighing three ounces, you'll pay $1.17 in postage. A business can bulk-mail a three-ounce catalog of the same size for as little as $0.14.

Specter Lets Off Some Steam
Arlen Specter, the newly minted Democratic Senator from Pennsylvania, let his hair down in a freewheeling press conference at the U.S. Senate today, making this comment about his former Republican colleagues: "Now I can say it: what a bunch of fucking assholes!"Well-played Arlen. Well-played.
Mr. Specter had a bounce in his step and lilt in his voice as he tore into members of his former party in a press appearance that appeared to set records with its body count.
"This is something I've wanted to say for years: is there a bigger dick on this planet than Mitch McConnell?" he said. "I know he thinks he's doing his job, but please, what a fucking turd."
Observers who are accustomed to the much-ballyhooed collegiality of the Senate were taken aback by the jaw-dropping profanity of Sen. Specter's parting shots, many of which were breathtaking in their anatomical crudeness.
"He must've had a lot of rage bottled up over the years," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). "Suddenly he was talking like a Somali pirate."
While Mr. Specter's tirade had many high points - or low points, depending on one's party affiliation - he reserved some of his harshest words for House Minority whip Eric Cantor: "Eric fucking Cantor? Please. That douche can kiss my goddamn stimulus package."

Update: It is now confirmed that he is switching. Here is Specter's statement on the party switch.
When I supported the stimulus package, I knew that it would not be popular with the Republican Party. But, I saw the stimulus as necessary to lessen the risk of a far more serious recession than we are now experiencing.
Since then, I have traveled the State, talked to Republican leaders and office-holders and my supporters and I have carefully examined public opinion. It has become clear to me that the stimulus vote caused a schism which makes our differences irreconcilable. On this state of the record, I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate. I have not represented the Republican Party. I have represented the people of Pennsylvania.
I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary.

The Little Girl is sick. Ugh.
Both kids have been rocking sniffles and coughs for a couple of days (weeks?), but this morning TLG woke up with her eyes pasted shut. With snot. Gross.
Doctor appointment is later today, but she is a miserable human being right now -- and as such it is my job to make her comfortable today.
Unless there is intervention from the other contributors, you likely won't see much from the blog today. Enjoy your Tuesday.

You Can't Make This Stuff Up...
Fox Broadcasting Company announced Monday it will not carry President Barack Obama's prime time press conference marking his first 100 days in office, the first time a broadcast network has refused an Obama administration request for that valuable airtime.Behold! Truth in advertising.
The network will instead carry its regularly scheduled episode "Lie to Me," according to its Web site.
Postscript: And before any of you FNC fans start firing up the e-mail program, I do realize that Fox News and the Fox network are two (very) different channels. I just thought that this was an interesting find.

It's a bird...it's a plane...it's a White House Blunder
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Workers and residents evacuated themselves from several downtown Manhattan buildings Monday morning after a low-flying Boeing 747 was spotted above the city's skyline. The aircraft was a White House plane taking part in a government-sanctioned photo shoot, the Federal Aviation Administration said.Good work government officials! DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB!
Louis Caldera, director of the White House Military Office, apologized for the confusion Monday. "Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision," he said. "While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it's clear that the mission created confusion and disruption."
People reported seeing the plane circle over the Upper New York Bay near the Statue of Liberty before it flew up the Hudson River. It was accompanied by two F-16s. In a written statement, New York Police Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne said the department had been alerted to the flight by the federal agency "with directives to local authorities not to disclose information about it."
At a news conference Monday afternoon, Mayor Michael Bloomberg expressed outrage that City Hall had been unable to warn New Yorkers of the flight in advance. "First thing is, I'm annoyed -- furious is a better word -- that I wasn't told," he said. He called the aviation administration's decision to classify details about the flight as sensitive and nonpublic "ridiculous" and "poor judgment." "Why the Defense Department wanted to do a photo op right around the site of the World Trade Center defies the imagination," he said. "Had we known, I would have asked them not to."

Chuckolytes, UNITE!
A Politics Daily shout-out to Cerebral Itch and the VCT staff:Now, 100 days into the new administration, the Chuckolytes are sticking with Todd as he continues his transition from fun-times campaign guru to Serious Network Newsman, even if it feels little like leaving the playground after a long, hot, fun recess.Sweet. Nice work Paul.
"Last year, (Todd) was ecstatic providing analysis from his comfort zone," said Paul Chamberlain, 41, who coined the "Chuckolyte" moniker, created the logo at right and launched VivaChuckTodd, one of several web homages to the goateed reporter. "Now he's been put into this incredibly rigid environment, but I can see him hitting his stride."

Open Thread: Media Bias
Many in the blogging community -- including Yours Truly -- insist that much of the mainstream media has a bias leaning one direction or another. What do you think could be done to overcome this bias? Do you think that it would help that network/newspaper/magazine in retaining viewers/readers as well as gaining new ones? How would the political blogging community react if there were no bias in traditional media?
Discuss.

Today's Obligatory Swine-Flu Post
WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Barack Obama said Monday that the swine flu outbreak is a "cause for concern and requires a heightened state of alert," but is not a "cause for alarm."WHEW! The government is on the case. That usually turns out great.
He added that the federal government is "closely monitoring" emerging cases and had declared a public health emergency as a "precautionary tool to ensure that we have the resources we need at our disposal to respond quickly and effectively."
Postscript: Mr. President, you may not have gotten this memo yet but -- we Americans don't usually respond to things labeled 'pandemic' with being more 'alert'. The first response is usually, 'GET THE F**K OUT OF MY WAY! I NEED DUCT-TAPE!!!'
I'm just sayin'...

Americans Getting Smarter With Their Dollars

It's too bad that it takes a tumbling economy for people to realize that spending less and saving more is the right thing to do:
PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll finds that about a third of Americans, 32%, say they have been spending less in recent months, and that they intend to solidify this behavior as their "new, normal" pattern in the years ahead. Twenty-seven percent say they are saving more now and intend to make this their new, normal pattern in the years ahead.I'm just as guilty of overspending as the next indulgent citizen, but The Pajama Family is also party of that 32% that is spending less.

Ask The Bloggess
My husband loves porn. I laugh during porn, I can't help it, I can't get past the shitty acting. Anyway, should I take my husbands love of porn as personally offensive? ~ ShariWorthy of checking back regularly. The Bloggess' blog can be found here.
Porn is awesome. It’s arousing and hysterical. The only way it would be better is if it tasted like pizza and cleaned your house. Even porn stars think porn is funny and if your husband doesn’t believe you, make him watch this. I suggest renting some really hysterical porn, like my personal favorite “Edward Penishands”. You will laugh your ass off and if your husband doesn't think it's entertaining you should divorce him and put out a personal ad that you had to divorce your husband because he didn't like all the porn you were bringing home and then you will get like 800 marriage proposals immediately.

Can I Offer You A Glass Of Crazy?
In a match made in heaven, Prison Planet has joined with former Ambassador and presidential candidate Alan Keyes to suggest that President Barrack [sic] Obama plans to “stage terror attacks, declare martial law and cancel the 2012 elections.”Sound advice -- but my guess is that Keyes will most likely ignore the sane advice offered and stay on his present 'birther' course.
While I’m certainly no Obama fan, that’s a very serious allegation to be tossing about in such a “well-respected” publication. It’s also “surprising” that they pay attention to anyone who would throw his daughter out of the house, stop “speaking to her and refuse to pay for college because she is gay.” The last time I checked, gay rights weren’t on the agenda at any recent CFR or Bilderberger meetings.
Libertarian, conservative and liberal nutballs have been suggesting that 9/11 was caused by President George W. Bush acting with the same intentions. I’ve heard these same folks say Dubya was going to declare martial law and cancel presidential elections. I’ve also heard people say that Bill Clinton was going to the same. I heard similar fantasies during the George H.W. Bush years. I heard them during the Reagan and Carter years, as well. While I’m not old enough to remember earlier examples, I’m sure such rumors have existed since the founding of the Republic.
Guess what? As many years as I’ve been hearing these reports, it ain’t happened yet.
Similar to his predecessor, the list of valid grievances against President Obama grows on a daily basis. My advice to Dr. Keyes is to get back on his medications and attack Obama for offenses committed on this planet.

I've always loved Ireland
But Kathy Ireland is making waves this week...and I am excited for those waves.
What I read was astounding and I learned that at the moment of conception a new life comes into being. The complete genetic blueprint is there, the DNA is determined, the blood type is determined, the sex is determined, the unique set of fingerprints that nobody has had or ever will have is already there." However Ireland admitted that she did everything she could to avoid becoming a believer in pro-life.That's my girl Kathy!
"I called Planned Parenthood and begged them to give me their best argument and all they could come up with that it is really just a clump of cells and if you get it early enough it doesn’t even look like a baby. Well, we’re all clumps of cells and the unborn does not look like a baby the same way the baby does not look like a teenager, a teenager does not look like a senior citizen. That unborn baby looks exactly the way human beings are supposed to look at that stage of development. It doesn’t suddenly become a human being at a certain point in time," Ireland argued. "I’ve also asked leading scientists across our country to please show me some shred of evidence that the unborn is not a human being. I didn’t want to be pro-life, but this is not a woman’s rights issue but a human rights issue."

Don't Blame Me... Blame Satan
Utah County Republicans defeated a resolution opposing well-heeled groups that a delegate claims are pushing a satanic plan to encourage illegitimate births and illegal immigration.Good call Mr. Rodeback. Good call.
Don Larsen, a Springville delegate, offered the resolution, titled "Resolution opposing the Hate America anti-Christian Open Borders cabal," warning delegates that an "invisible government" comprised of left-wing foundations was pumping money into the Democratic Party to push for looser immigration laws and anti-family legislation.
Larsen said Democrats get most of the votes cast by illegal immigrants and people in dysfunctional families.
But it's not the Democrats who are behind this strategy, Larsen said. It's the devil.
"Satan's ultimate goal is to destroy the family," Larsen said, "and these people are playing a leading part in it."
Larsen's resolution contained quotes from the New Testament on the battle between good and evil. The copy of the resolution handed to delegates stated it "fulfills scriptural prophecies about our times."
Larsen offered a similar resolution at the 2007 convention. That also was defeated by delegates.
David Rodeback, a delegate from American Fork, urged delegates to forcefully reject the resolution, as it would do the party more harm than good.
Rodeback said the religious language Larsen used would push people away from the GOP.

CNN calls Obama administration "partisan"
Highlights from the article about the so-called "Open, Transparent and Bi-Partisan" administration that President Obama promised us:
The president's stimulus package passed with three Republican votes.
Obama's budget blueprint passed the House of Representatives and the Senate without a single GOP vote. And the $410 billion bill to fund the government turned into a partisan clash.
Democrats last week, at the behest of Obama's team, decided to use a rule that ultimately will prevent Republicans from waging a filibuster against the overhaul of health care. At the end of the day, if they can hold their own members in line, Democrats won't have to make concessions to Republicans to pass health care legislation.
"We had an election which was about our differing views of the direction our country was going in," Pelosi said at a press conference a week after Obama's inauguration. "The American people agreed with us."
My problem is not that Barack Obama and the Democratic congress is practicing partisan politics...I expected that. My problem is that Barack Obama stood up there on election night and said to us McCain supporters - "I am your President too". He campaigned on being a moderate figure while the folks like Hannity and O'Reilly were scoffed at for calling him a liberal. He is not being upfront with the American people (despite his numerous press conferences) about the costs of his budget and "stimulus" package (see the CBO report on this). He has been in office for 100 days...some people would say "give him a chance". I am giving him a chance everyday...but I cannot agree with many of the positions he has already taken and I am waiting for him to take on his own party on a major issue before Pelosi/Reid run this country into the ground. When in Rome...

Tim Pawlenty On Twitter
It seems that the good governor has officially adopted 'T-Paw' as a new moniker -- at least on his Twitter page...Let it never be said that the politicians aren't trying to be hip. T-Paw maybe trying a bit too hard -- but at least he is giving it a shot. I understand trying to appeal to a younger audience is an important factor for the GOP right now -- but if Newt Gingrich starts calling himself G-Newt, I'm done.
Postscript: Make sure that you don't confuse T-Paw with T'Pau. A common error.

Pontiac's Judgment Day

First Chrysler... now Pontiac:
DETROIT — General Motors says it will cut 21,000 U.S. factory jobs by next year and phase out its storied Pontiac brand as part of a major restructuring effort needed to get more taxpayer aid.I must admit that, while this is bad news, I'm not that upset. Maybe it's because Pontiac (GM) stopped making bad-ass cars like the GTO Judge years ago...
The struggling automaker also says it will offer 225 shares of common stock for every $1,000 in notes held by bondholders as part of debt-for-equity swap.
The annoucements came in a filing Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
GM is living on $15.4 billion in government loans and faces a June 1 deadline to restructure and get more government money. If the restructuring doesn't satisfy the government, the company could go into bankruptcy protection.
