Peacekeepers in Mexico?
Back in March I speculated about the possibility of a US military engagement in Mexico due to the rising conflict between the Mexican government and the drug cartels. Over the summer the Mexican government sent 5000 solders to its northern border areas and to towns like Ciudad Juarez in an attempt to restore order and put an end to the violence. News from the area seemed to slow down and take a back seat to things like the economy and the death of Micheal Jackson.
Yesterday, Business groups from Ciudad Juarez, led by National Chamber of Commerce President Daniel Murguia, have requested that UN Peacekeepers be brought in. Since Mid-October there have been nearly 2000 killings in Ciudad Juarez. This is a proposal ... for international forces to come here to help out the domestic (security) forces
Soledad Maynez, president of the Ciudad Juarez Association of Maquiladoras said...
...
We have seen the U.N. peacekeepers enter other countries that have a lot fewer problems than we haveWhat we are asking for with the blue helmets (U.N. peacekeepers) is that we know they are the army of peace, so we could use not only the strategies they have developed in other countries ... but they also have technology
I don't expect the UN to act on this request any time soon. However the presence of Mexican Military has done little to put a stop to the violence, that is spilling over on to the streets of American cities like El Paso, LA, and elsewhere.
