Oprah's Friday Live

On Oprah on Friday...she had a roundtable in which Jenny McCarthy said...

"I believe marriage should be like a drivers license...it expires every 4 years with the option to renew". To which Oprah commented..."Marriage is evolving as we are evolving".

Does anyone else find these comments sad? Are we really at the point that being married...committing yourself to one person forever...entering into a physical, spiritual and mental commitment for life should "have the option of renewal"?

This breaks my heart and spirit that someone like Jenny McCarthy cannot only get away with preaching that she has found the cure to autism...but that she thinks marriage should be treated like a drivers license. I realize Ms. McCarthy doesnt speak for a lot of people and is a Hollywood elite who used to host "Singled Out" on MTV...but it saddens me that people think this way and that divorce is so prevalent in our society today and is even encouraged by the words of a former playboy playmate on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Ok I am done posting for a while. Whew...this is wearing me out.

Get away with it? Who is going to "handle" her? The thought police? This is getting very George Orewellian, isn't it?

If you go into politics and entertainment with paper thin skin you're going to have a very rough time.

I don't believe anything that Jenny McCarthy said but I don't let it affect me. I believe in marriage and I will teach my daughter to believe in marriage.

What she has to say doesn't change that.

If you wanted to up the 50% success rate of marriage I got two words for you...Gay Marriage. Conservatives such as yourself Diddy are doing their damnedest to keep heteros married at all costs, regardless if it is a healthy marriage good for the individuals involved, including children....yet you refuse to grant two people who actually WANT to be together that same right.

It makes no sense. None.

That's not to say gays won't get divorced, the larger point is how you're arguing to keep people together who don't want to be and keeping people apart who do.

What is sad is that she wants people to go into a marriage with the attitude that, after 4 years, they can dissolve it with no consequences. It is not a good idea from a practical point, as well as a moral one. If you don't renew a driver's license, it just means you can't drive any more. There are no financial or supportive consequences. If you don't renew a marriage license, does that mean you don't have any other financial or supportive consequences, such as , alimony and/or child support? Otherwise, if you have to go through a divorce, what's the point of the license renewal?
