Patriotism And Service

Classy:
I will never question the patriotism of others in this campaign. And I will not stand idly by when I hear others question mine.
...
For those like John McCain who have endured physical torment in service to our country — no further proof of such sacrifice is necessary. And let me also add that no one should ever devalue that service, especially for the sake of a political campaign, and that goes for supporters on both sides.
An excellent way to respond to both attacks on Obama's patriotism and criticisms of McCain's military service. Classy all around.

Bad To The Bone

The Pajama Parents... on a badass bike trip.

I certainly hope that I am fortunate enough to do this kind of stuff when I'm retired. Awesome.

The Left's Attack On McCain

As I have said here before, I support Barack Obama. I voted for him in the primary (after switching my registration to Democratic) and I will be voting for him in the general election in November. These facts, however, do not diminish my respect for John McCain.

John McCain is a veteran of the Vietnam war - which, in itself says something. But beyond that, he was taken prisoner and held for five years in the infamous Hanoi Hilton. No matter what your political stripes are, you have to admit that making a sacrifice of that magnitude is worthy of respect. John McCain is the son of a then-very powerful four-star-admiral in the United States Navy. If young McCain didn't want to serve in Vietnam, I'm sure he could have somehow avoided going to Vietnam (*cough* Bush *cough*). He didn't. He served - and with honor.

So now we hear these criticisms from people like General Wesley Clark and Americablog. Criticisms like "besides being tortured, what did McCain do to excel in the military?" and "I don't think riding in a fighter-plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president." The irony is that Wesley Clark also served honorably in our nation's military - which is one glaring reason that I was so surprised when I heard his commentary.

The idea that McCain's record of service to our country is up for debate seems downright ludicrous to me. How can someone in good conscience question a veteran's service? How can Wesley Clark suggest that John McCain is unqualified for the position of President? I will concede that military service alone does not qualify someone for public office, but surely the combination of military service and his record in government would suggest that John McCain has some prerequisites covered.

I feel reassured that Barack Obama does not share these negative views and opinions. He has denounced this type of rhetoric and continually honors John McCain and his service to our country. I think that we will continue to see Obama praise John McCain - as we all should praise anyone who serves our country - despite what some commentators in the media and blogosphere say. Veterans of all branches of service deserve our dignity and respect - whether we agree with the wars they fight or not.

Inspiration (Or Lack Thereof)

I've learned a lot in the past year. Ever since I decided to make a somewhat serious (albeit unpaid and unsponsored) stab at the whole 'blogosphere' thing, I have had good days and bad.

I'm having a tough time feeling inspired lately. Maybe it's because of the 'lull' in political activity right now. After all, during the height of the primary campaign, I had nearly a dozen different subjects whom I was free to discuss and/or critique. Alas, we are down to the final two and while I said back in April and May that I couldn't wait for the primary season to be over, I now find myself having less to say.

Granted, that could all change tomorrow - especially if King George were to exit the Oval Office and declare war on Iran.

But I highly doubt that will happen (please God, Allah, Buddha, Yahweh, Xenu, et al.; don't let that happen).

Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know that while the blog may seem to lack substance lately - it's not because I don't care or am 'phoning it in'. Rather, I've reached a challenge in my writing technique that I haven't faced before: Blogger's Block. With any luck, it will be a short stint.

::: UPDATE :::

I just watched Obama's speech on patriotism and McCain's response to General Wesley Clark's comments over the weekend. I think that I'll have more to say soon! Yay!

"Barack Obama Smokes Crack"

Really guys? This is just sad.
They even left business cards on the vehicles that disparage both the Illinois senator and his rival, Republican John McCain. The cards voice support for Sen. Hillary Clinton, Obama's former opponent.
Why can't everyone just get along? Or at least argue a substantive issue...

Snarkiness without bounds:

Go ahead and blame everyone but yourselves guys. Oh, and why don't you go ahead and pass some legislation that in effect blames people who are gay for your (alleged) shortcomings.

Duh.

Seth MacFarlane Takes Over The Web

Freakin' sweet!
In September, Seth MacFarlane, creator of “Family Guy” on television, will unveil a carefully guarded new project called “Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy.” Unlike “Family Guy,” which is broadcast on Fox, this animation series will appear exclusively on the Internet.
And a huge cry of 'Doh!' is heard coming from Matt Groening.

Bill Clinton: "Kiss My Ass"

Maybe.

It's probably not as bad as it sounds - and Terry McAuliffe has essentially contradicted the story. But when you hear a report that says:
A senior Democrat who worked for Mr Clinton has revealed that he recently told friends Mr Obama could "kiss my ass" in return for his support.
...things definitely seem to be quite unstable between the Democratic nominee for president and the former president. Then again, we are talking about Bill Clinton here...

Per the L.A. Times:
[A]s part of his negative critique of Obama's liberal stances on economic issues and other matters, [Grover Norquist] termed the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee "John Kerry with a tan."

Since Norquist isn't running for anything, he can get away with such remarks.
If you ask me, he shouldn't be able get away with stupid comments like that. If you are going to disagree with someone, that is fine. Criticize their policies or legislative record. Say something substantive. Don't dog the color of their skin.

Will Smith As Barack Obama?

In an interview with MTV, the star of the upcoming Hancock talked about the possibility of portraying Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama:
"It's right here," Smith said, holding up his legendarily prominent ears, which are not unlike Obama's lobes. "That's the key. That's the key. America loves ears, you know? Mickey Mouse started it; Goofy and Dumbo followed behind. And America just loves the ears."
Will Smith is a fantastic actor (despite Ryan's disdain for Independence Day) and I think he would likely turn out a strong performance as the Illinois senator.

But it won't be much of a move if Obama doesn't win the White House. I don't see Hollywood clamoring to turn John Kerry's life story into a 100 minute drama...

The irony is that the man who started JamesDobsonDoesntSpeakForMe.com is not only the pastor of the largest Methodist congregation in the country - he was also the officiant for Jenna Bush's recent wedding ceremony. Additionally, he is also an ardent supporter of Barack Obama.
I think it's a crime and a shame that Senator Obama has had to explain the fact that he's a Christian. Criticize his politics. Criticize his stance on whatever, but don't question his faith. Never in the history of American politics has someone said that he is a Christian and someone came back to say, 'No you're not.'

Why The Bush Administration Is Inept

Apparently, everyone likes to re-write the Constitution of the United States. Watch:

Now, read the first sentence in Article II, Section I of the actual Constitution:
The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Addington misquote the Constitution to benefit his argument?

Dr. No Vs. John McCain

John McCain has posted a new web video that attack Barack Obama for saying "no" to things like offshore drilling and the gas-tax-holiday.

I tend to agree with Jake Tapper:
[U]nless one is over a certain age, a Sean Connery fan, or a member of Ian Fleming's immediate family, is the first James Bond film -- one that then-President John F. Kennedy heralded as a fave -- really the best reference for a 71-year-old candidate to be making?

On the plus side, at least it's a talkie.

I'm a HUGE fan of Ian Fleming and the James Bond series. Sean Connery executes my favorite portrayal of the British super-spy. But will anyone who is not well-versed in Bond-lore get the joke?

Supporters Of The Second Amendment Rejoice

The Supreme Court Of The United States weighs in on a controversial issue (and campaign argument):
Answering a 127-year old constitutional question, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to have a gun, at least in one’s home. The Court, splitting 5-4, struck down a District of Columbia ban on handgun possession.

Bush Vs. North Korea

The tension appears to be waning. Well, at least a little bit.

I watched President Bush's speech from the Rose Garden this morning and I have to say - it's no wonder that so many people think he's less-than-intelligent. The guy is simply NOT a good public speaker.

I'll update with video when I find it. It's entertaining.

On a more pertinent level, I'm pleased to find that the Bush administration is finally willing to talk to friends and enemies alike. The idea that our country's foreign policy stance was to simply ignore states and regimes that don't like us was truly asinine.

My guess is that since we have met with some success in the talks with North Korea, Iran will be next on the list. Although, that would completely contradict John McCain's campaign talking points...

Despite a depressing weekend chock full of news coverage of Tim Russert's untimely passing, I can definitely report that the Pajama Wife and I are thoroughly enjoying our beach holiday.

I watched Al Gore's endorsement of Barack Obama this morning. My only question is what took him so long?

The Clear Choice For Feminists

Pajama Reader John sent me this link from the Boston Globe. It's a great op-ed about the choice that feminists have in the upcoming presidential election.

Sure, there are bound to be TONS of women who had the hearts and minds set on Hillary Clinton winning the Democratic primary and beating John McCain in the fall. Alas, that has not happened.

While there will inevitably be the ardent Clinton supporters who will vow to never support Obama for president, I understand that and have accepted it. However, when you compare McCain's record on women's issues to Obama's record, a pattern begins to emerge:
What I don't get, can't get, is seeing some of you riled up Clinton supporters threatening to vote for McCain.

Let me get this straight; you consider yourself a Democrat and a feminist. Yet rather than vote for a man who supports a woman's right to choose, children's healthcare, and an end to the war in Iraq, you would vote for a man who voted against all of these things.

You would vote for a man who is promising to nominate far-right activists for the Supreme Court, a man who votes consistently against choice, affirmative action, and workers' rights.

You would vote for a man who supports President Bush on most major issues vs. a man whose positions are quite similar to Clinton's.
These women who call themselves feminists and threaten - nay - pledge to vote for McCain are exercising their rights. I cannot fault them for that (indeed, at the very least they are participating in the democratic process - whether I'm happy with their decision or not). But, I sincerely believe that they are allowing their blind rage and pent up angst against a male-dominated society to be unleashed on one Barack Obama.
OK, you're deeply aggrieved that your candidate, who you think is entitled to the nomination, seems to have lost to someone who played fair and won.

I say, get over it. Sometimes your candidate loses. (My candidates almost always lose). Then, you vote for the next best candidate. You don't pout and whine and vote for somebody you really don't believe in. You don't stamp your feet and refuse to vote.

In short, you grow up.

Meanwhile, by voting for John McCain they will be supporting everything that goes against the idea of feminism.

I have said all throughout the primary process that when Barack Obama got the nomination that there would be some extremely upset Clinton supporters - but that eventually they will see that they need to unite behind the party's nominee. I still think that, for the most part, this will happen. The question now becomes; How long will these angry Clinton supporters wait until returning to the fold?

Man Stuff

I have had a super-Saturday.

The morning started (as usual) with a nice relaxing cup of coffee on my front porch. I wanted to get as much porch-time in as possible, as the weather-people had predicted a fairly nasty heatwave coming through my area of Pennsylvania this weekend - and they were spot-on in their predictions.

The Pajama Parents are visiting this weekend as well - which made for nice relaxing porch-time conversation. And coffee.

As the air got warmer and warmer, I found that my father and I were the only two left on the porch - and we were talking politics (duh). It occurred to us that we should head inside to get out of the heat, as well as listen to Hillary Clinton concede the Democratic primary to Barack Obama.

After waiting what seemed like an eternity for Senator Clinton to show up, she finally made her speech at approximately 1:45 p.m. The pundits all seemed to agree that she has done what she needed to unite the Democratic party. I'm not as optimistic as others. I think that it's going to take a bit of time before the Clinton supporters' wounds have healed - and they come around to support the Democratic nominee.

All of that aside - after watching Hillary Clinton (finally) give her concession speech, the Pajama Father and I headed up to my workshop (read: garage) to do some 'man stuff' (hence the title of this post).

First, we put his car up on ramps. We transplanted the hitch on the rear bumper of his car to the rear bumper on my car. It sounded like a simple-enough task at the time - but it took longer, and more sweat, to accomplish than we had anticipated. Fortunately, we both have PT Cruisers, so the parts were nearly identical.

After the hitch transplant was completed, we turned my car around on the ramps and pulled the plug on the oil pan. A quick trip to Wal-Mart for Prestone and a Fram filter, and we had changed the oil and filter on my car. Again, a simple automotive maintenance task, but I must admit that there is something so very appealing about 1) fixing stuff, particularly in a DIY fashion, and 2) getting all grimy and dirty. I derived a great sense of satisfaction after getting those projects out of the way.

Incidentally, the whole hitch project is in anticipation of my trip to the Jersey Shore next week (sweeeeet). The Pajama Wife and I are headed to Ocean City, New Jersey from June 14th through the 21st. The hitch is for a rack to carry our bikes (shout-out to Norm for lending us the rack). Computer update::: no word from the computer-tech-dudes yet. I'm hoping to get my PC back before we leave for our vacation. If not, it will be yet another week of sparse posting. You'll know when I get it back because this one-post-every-other-day crap will come to a screeching halt and you'll see my normal eight to twelve posts-per-day pattern resume.

Anyway....

I am now showered and refreshed. I hope that you have stayed cool this weekend. The local weather forecast said this morning that Monday is supposed to reach 99 degrees. I can't say that I'm looking forward to that. Oh, did I forget to mention that I do NOT have air-conditioning in my house? Yeah. No.

Mail Bag

First of all, I have to say how happy I am that Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee (presumptive) for president. The Pajama Wife and I were glued to the television last evening and it felt like it was New Year's Eve or something.

Despite my lack-of-connection to the blogosphere lately, I'm still getting readers - and mail. Normally the comments are short one-liners like, "good point" or "I don't agree", but this one really caught my eye.
You claim to be a gadabout and quasi-pseudo-intellectual, what a bunch of psychobabble. You claim to be a political independent that does not tow-the-line of any political party. I have read your comments on MSNBC's First Read for the past six months and you're not a man of your word.

You have consistently praised Barack Obama and bashed Clinton and McCain. You never call into question anything about Obama but seem to have all the time in the world to dissect every thing about Clinton's and McCain's past, present and future.

There are plenty of things that Obama has not been forthright about and early on the media gave him a free pass, out of fear of being called racist. By the time they started to gingerly examine him it was too late, the momentum was on his side.

All the Obama supporters have spent the past six months trashing Clinton and her supporters and they actually are stupid enough to think that her supporters will just gladly throw their arms around Obama.

They had better wake up and smell the coffee, because the damage has been done and the more they continue to trash the Clinton supporters the worse it's going to get. Her supporters are not just a little upset by all the insults, their mad as hell, really pissed off and their not going to take it.

The last thing that I will enlighten you with is the fact that the RNC is organizing a huge campaign to pull in all of the Clinton supporters and while it's just in the earliest of stages, the RNC is only waiting for the day that Clinton officially announces that she's dropping out, and then they're going to launch the Clinton Supporters for McCain Campaign and once every one of Clinton's supporters are courted and jump on the McCain bandwagon, there isn't anything that Obama will be able to do to reverse the tide. Obama can not win the general election with only 1/4 of the support of the country and considering the fact that Clinton has received 47.7% of the popular vote to Obama's 49.1%, for all intensive purposes, that's roughly half and it's a large enough number that without it, Obama can't win in November.
Yeah. Wow. You can see why this one caught my eye. My response:
Mr. [commenter]:

Thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate it when people write-in, whether they agree with me or not. First, please allow me to apologize for the untimely response in my reply. My computer is 'in the shop' due to a viral infection (yuck). I have not had access to e-mail for several days.

I would like to discuss a few points of yours.

Where to begin? Indeed I am an Obama supporter. I make no bones about that. However, I still consider myself a political independent. The reason that I say I 'do not tow-the-line of any political party' is because I do not. On the political spectrum, I have both conservative and progressive leanings. For example, I believe in small government, fiscal responsibility and most of all individual liberties. These are truly conservative ideals. On the flip-side of the coin, I believe in a woman's right-to-choose, stem-cell research and gay-marriage. These are truly progressive ideals. Truth be told, I would be very happy with Ron Paul as president as well.

There are things about Barack Obama's policies that I'm not entirely excited about - but the reason that I offered my humble endorsement of him is because out of the entire field of presidential candidates, he is the only one who inspired me.

I'm unsure of the "things that Obama has not been forthright about". Could you elaborate?

The media's 'free pass' is a myth. Sure, I think that there are some networks and pundits who went easier on Obama than other networks and pundits, but the same could be said for Hillary Clinton, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, etc.

Even as I write this, there is a breaking news bulletin about Tony Rezko's indictment on television right now. Hardly a free pass if you ask me. Don't even get me started about all of the pastor nonsense...

I agree with you on this point [that the damage has been done] - and I love the smell of coffee.

I feel that Obama supporters, myself included, need to work very hard to repair any damage that has been done - or any feelings that have been hurt - with Clinton supporters. I will admit that at times I was too harsh on the junior Senator from New York. However, I also must admit that I am ever so pleased that she didn't get the nomination. This country desperately needs a new direction and the Clinton brand completely represents 'old Washington' to me.

I am completely aware of the RNC's campaign to poach Clinton supporters from the Democratic party fold. Politically, it's a great idea - but I believe that there is one extremely fatal flaw: Iraq.

A good friend of mine is an ardent McCain supporter. He and I love to debate each other on a great many things in the political world - and he has argued to me that the Democratic party has a rift that will be impossible to heal. My response to that argument is that sure, right now Hillary Clinton's supporters are supremely upset that she did not get the party's nomination. They will likely be angry for the next month. Maybe even two months.

BUT, when November rolls around and the choice that they have is Barack Obama or John McCain - any Clinton supporter who is a true-blue Democrat will not be able to pull the lever for McCain. There is no way that a true Democrat is going to vote for John McCain and his lock-step voting record with George W. Bush - and the Iraq war. I just don't see it happening.

Look, I understand that you are angry at me. I have gotten e-mails like yours before. There are many people who disagree with me and I try to explain my side of our disagreements in a calm and respectful way. I hope that I have done that here.

The last thing that I would like to mention is that I do believe that I am a man of my word. Just because I support one particular candidate in this presidential election, does not mean that I agree with 100% of said candidate's policies - or the policies of said candidate's party.

Thanks for writing. I hope to continue our discussion.
There you have it. I certainly hope that my response comes off as kind - I really didn't want to respond with a negative tone.

It is scary-humbling to know that the things that I write here can have such a strong effect on someone that they are compelled to personally compose and send an e-mail to me.

I love blogging. Oh how I wish that my computer would be fixed soon...

Barack Obama Will Win It

No computer yet (currently blogging on the Pajama Wife's Treo - ick). Despite the lack of hardware, I had to check-in.

Wow. Barack Obama is racking up the SuperDelegates today. Since I started watching Hardball at 5:00 p.m., Obama has gained at least 15 Supers. Since this morning, he has nabbed 38 SuperDelegates - by my count. Incredible.

Tonight is the night. Barack Obama will become the Democratic party's nominee for the presidency.

I'll be weighing-in later this week (hopefully) on the campaign against John McCain - and the prospect of Obama adding Hillary Clinton to the Democratic ticket.

Enjoy and remember... I told you so! *wink*

Hillary Clinton Wins Puerto Rico

Hillary Clinton has won the Democratic primary election in Puerto Rico.

According to Chuck Todd, Barack Obama only needs to win 19% of all the remaining delegates (pledged and Super) to become the Democratic nominee for president. In contrast, Hillary Clinton would need to win 85%.

That's a pretty steep hill to climb...
