The Google Project

You can learn a lot from Google. No, really... you can.

As you may very well know, Google is the most used search engine on the world wide web. So I decided I wanted to do a Google images search and see what I could find.

My goal was simple. Look at the first Top 20 images that appear when I type the Presidential candidates name in the search field and see how many negative images I could find of that person.

Why is this important? It really isn't. But it gives you an idea of the countries and worlds perception of the candidate. Now this isn't science by any means, but it's interesting and it's fun.

I searched for John McCain first and I came up with seven negative images out of 20.

What do I consider a negative image? Something that may show a person in a negative light. A presidential candidate should be honorable and statesman looking. Proud, honorable, happy, authoritative.

The first image was a photoshop image giving a warning about John McCain and how he'd cater to special interests. The others showed him hugging bush like a lost school boy, His infamous temper in a couple of pictures and someone photoshopped his face onto a Rhino. Which you may or may not know is an acronym for "Republican in name only".

In all fairness, the number one picture of Senator John McCain was his senator picture where he is smiling and looking respectful.

Now on the other side of the coin I did the same search for Senator Barack Obama. The numbers were quite different. I came up with two negative pictures of Obama and they were both on the last line of the search field.

The negative pictures were that of Baracky '08. A spin off from the Borat promo photo. Showing him as unexperienced and unintelligent. The other photo wasn't as bad but the website it lead to definitely was. It was just a picture of him looking tired, haggard and a half smoked cigarette hanging out of his mouth lazily. The site is hosted on the Marinette County GOP website which has the recent McCain attacks against Obama and even an image link showing Obama in a muslim get up which takes you to the Jihad Watch website.

The number one picture for Barack Obama was him in the ocean with no shirt off. Looking in shape and in style. Happy and confident. Not something you would normally see of any President or Presidential candidate.

I found this project of mine interesting in the fact that it appears more people view McCain in a negative light just a month before the election. Maybe Google will someday be used as a prediction device? Who knows?!

disclaimer: Not everyone will yield the same top 20 search images as I had. Individual experience may differ.
